AnnotationThis paper draws together the proceedings of the first seminar held under the auspices of the International Longevity Centre United Kingdom (ILC-UK) on one of the major issues in our ageing society. The presentations, debate and discussions covered both the financial, health and emotional impacts of unemployment on individuals and on society as a whole. Among areas where gaps in knowledge is greatest include: where unemployment policy initiatives should be focused (younger or older people); whether early retirers want to retire; the extent of people's security or insecurity when not in work; skills acquisition; and what other or new roles can be identified for older people. Such issues set an agenda for research for ILC-UK. (RH).
