Annotation | This is the text of the author's PhD dissertation at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark. She presents a literature review on what is known about socio-economic determinants of longevity, and the data description and methodology used. The effects of socio-economic determinants on survival at old ages in England and Wales are examined using the 1% Longitudinal Study of England and Wales; and for Denmark, from a Danish sample. Comparisons are then made between the two national areas in terms of changes in mortality in the previous 100 years, sex differences in mortality, and differences by social class and occupational category, wealth and living conditions, and areas of residence. Central to the author's analysis was the so-called causation mechanism: the link between socio-economic status with survival. (RH). |
