AnnotationCommunicating well with people from ethnic minorities who have dementia is essential. The authors discuss how interpreters can help and hinder. They offer some guidelines on working with interpreters in a dementia care setting regarding when to use an interpreter; and things to consider before booking an interpreter, and before, during and after the appointment. Maintaining patient confidentiality and having an interpreter who can be impartial throughout (so not a family member) is essential. The authors conclude that attention to guidelines for working with interpreters can ensure that such interactions are both effective and culturally sensitive. (RH).
