Annotation | This article examines why and how the first pension policies were adopted in North America,. Europe and the Antipodes. It identifies the most salient dimensions of pension policy, and discusses national policy responses to the challenges of ageing, changing employment patterns and fiscal austerity. The article also analyses the most important explanations for cross-national differences in pension policy.
