Annotation | The One Mile Project was developed at Iolani School, a private college preparatory school in Honolulu, Hawaii. Its purpose was to innovate and create change for older adults living within a one-mile radius of the school campus. The programme curriculum aims to educate high school students about ageing issues, foster empathy and empower students to create change through projects that utilise design thinking, a process through which students identify needs and explore potential solutions. Generally, working with older people has had a positive impact on the young people's lives and challenges ageist stereotypes. Students commonly recognise that with age comes experience and that older adults have much to share with the younger generation. (JL). |
