Annotation | This "manifesto" assesses the Government's progress in attending to matters relating to ageing since the House of Lords Select Committee on Public Service and Demographic Change report, "Ready for ageing?" and the Ready for Ageing Alliance (R4AA) was formed (both 2013). It finds that future generations of older people will find themselves poorer than today's pensioners because the economy, our communities and health and care are not ready for ageing. In the longer term, R4AA calls for the: creation of a permanent commission on Demographic Change to focus on responding to our changing society; and a single point of contact in Government responsible for leading and responding to the challenges and opportunities of ageing. On urgent policy issues, the advice is to focus on the crisis in social care with the aim of achieving a sustainable long term financial settlement which ensures people's care needs are met. The planned review into auto-enrolment should be brought forward, and its remit extended to look at how to increase savings and ensure future pensioners can realise an adequate income. (RH). |
