Annotation | The Debenham Project (www.the-debenham-project.org.uk), based in the village of Debenham, Suffolk, is a community-led initiative offering support to family carers of people with dementia. This article briefly reports on the findings of a survey methodology that was developed to engage the views and perspectives of family carers, volunteers and key professionals. Among key issues emerging from the survey, carers reported feeling isolated and perplexed. Carers typically turned first to family for help, followed by their GP and the Debenham Project next. There were mixed views about whether an early diagnosis of dementia was of value, however a strong majority saw early help and support as beneficial. Many carers reported being affected by the stigma of dementia. Overall the research discovered a lack of knowledge and unpreparedness among carers. More education and training is needed for carers to understand what is happening and what to expect. (JL). |
