Annotation | As in most of Southeast Asia Myanmar (also known as Burma) is experiencing population ageing. The situation of older persons in Myanmar is of particular interest given that it is the poorest country in Southeast Asia with the lowest per capita GDP. It also has some of the worst health indicators and a very weak health care sector. With little information heretofore available about older persons in the country, HelpAge International sponsored the 2012 Myanmar Ageing Survey (MAS) with funding from the UNFPA. The survey serves as the primary source of data for this article, which looks at the health of older people in Myanmar, as well as their demographic and social characteristics, financial security, economic activities, material well-being, living arrangements and sources of family support.
