AnnotationThis paper gives an overview of the situation of older persons aged 60 and above in India with a particular focus on demographic issues and socio-cultural changes. It also highlights some major concerns and challenges towards the promotion of older people's welfare, including healthcare, economic security, abuse and crime, and older people's rights. Also highlights the contribution that various groups can make to address those challenges including older people themselves, the family, NGOs, for-profit ventures, educational institutions and Government. Suggests some action points that can be taken as a way forward in promoting older people's wellbeing including constitutional and legal provision, policy initiatives and welfare programmes and schemes.
