Annotation | This paper is based on a research study carried out in two villages of Lucknow District in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The paper aims to present the existing support system for the older rural population in a changing social scenario. Change is a universal phenomenon and it is ongoing in every society. Rapid population growth, particularly of older people, is a major concern of contemporary society with regard to their care and well-being. The family is considered a major institution to provide care and support to its older members but now in this fast changing social scenario, its ability to take care of its aged members is diminishing rapidly. Older people are facing various problems pertaining to their health, family, income and adjustment which make them vulnerable. In this context a support system is highly necessary for the well-being of older people and particularly for those living in rural areas. The present study was an exploratory one and used interviews for primary assessment, whereas a wide range of secondary materials were accessed, reviewed and analysed to support the study. (JL). |
