Annotation | Nigeria's population is ageing rapidly. This and the accompanying change in young caregivers' perception of old age is having a negative impact on care and support for older people in that country. To date there has been little scholarly research in Nigeria to determine how changing perceptions of old age are affecting care and support for older people. This paper examines how these perceptions are affecting care and support for the older Esan population of South Nigeria. The paper used in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs). 32 IDIs and 12 FGDs were conducted on older people and their caregivers in both urban and rural areas. Results indicated that traditional care and support for older people in the study area is diminishing due to the way the younger generation perceive old age. This change in perception is linked to Western influence which is gradually eroding the traditional and cultural belief where older people were seen in a positive light. The author argues the need for a cultural reawakening and reverence for older people. This may be carried out within the framework of a creative multi-track social policy intervention that would enable families to continue being the main care providers for their older relatives.
