Annotation | This article surveys the digital divide in South Korea and how some domestic agencies are addressing the issue through computer and Internet education. The conclusion indicates that significant efforts by the Korean government and private agencies have achieved significant heights in reducing the digital divide. The government policies of South Korea, built on its recognition as a globally renowned tech-savvy country, are actively in support of bridging the digital divide through ICT education. Nonetheless inadequate digital skills and low participation by older adults remain a challenge for digital divide programmes. It can be argued that the pace of innovation, particularly with tablet devices, leads to new forms of the digital divide as seen through demographic variables such as occupational status, age and educational level. The author shares a few examples of 'good practices' with an aim of inspiring more action toward intergenerational interactions in the digital world. (JL). |
