Annotation | Older people can be net contributors to the country's economy, if local government has the financial sustainability, freedom and flexibility to support them. The Local Government Association Task and Finish Group on Ageing was established to explore the challenges and opportunities that an ageing population presents for local government and local government communities now and in the next 20-30 years. This executive summary outlines the main report's findings on how older people are part of the solution to the changes that face us. It summarises examples of good practice from leading councils that demonstrate what older people could contribute when local councils take account of their needs in relation to: housing and neighbourhoods; outdoor spaces and buildings; transport; information and advice; health and well-being; social participation and respect and social inclusion. To achieve what is required, the Group recommends that government: develop a national Ageing Well Strategy; continue to enable the devolution process to local government; and agree a new, improved financial settlement for local government.
