AnnotationThe Courtyard Centre for the Arts in Hereford has been involved in projects with older people since 2010, one of which is creative writing and reading poetry activities for people with dementia in residential and care homes in Herefordshire. This paper summarises an evaluation of the first two years of the project which was set up with a poet in residence who mentored six poets to deliver poetry activities. The evaluation was undertaken by questionnaires that were given to staff and carers undertaking training workshops; the poets, staff and carers in the homes who facilitated the activities; and the residents who took part in the project. The evaluation found that staff and carers had increased confidence, and that the project helped then in gaining more knowledge about the residents. For the residents, the project had positive effects, including enhanced communication, increased self-esteem, enhanced self-worth, and making them feel less isolated. (RH).
