AnnotationThe purpose of this paper was to describe lessons learned from a home care practice for frail older people. The study was written from the viewpoint of a general practitioner who, with the help of colleagues, set up a home care project known as HomeViVE, or Home Visits to Vancouver's Elders. This was strictly a description of the author's point of view in respect of care of frailty designed to avoid institution. Generally, frail older patients chose care focused on comfort and function as opposed to the traditional systematic healthcare goals of rescue and prevention. The author argues that this choice should be respected. Cost-saving as well as improvement in care is possible through team-based relationship-oriented home care of frail older people where that care emphasises comfort and function. (JL).
