AnnotationThe London Age-friendly Cities research project was one of 33 projects in this World Health. Organization (WHO) global initiative, which was sponsored by the Public Health Agency of Canada. This report examines the extent to which local policies, services and structures are enabling older people to "age actively" in London. It provides an overview of existing research into urban ageing, and where possible, relates this to the specific context of ageing. It summarises the key findings of qualitative research conducted in the London Boroughs of Newham and Waltham Forest by Ipsos MORI Social Research Institute, which explored locally perceived barriers to, and opportunities for making the physical environment age-friendly. The main policy recommendations are summed up as involving, enabling and informing older people. The report also outlines the Age-friendly Cities project's objectives. For WHO, this was to identify indicators of an age-friendly city, and to produce a practical guide for advocacy, community development and policy change, to make urban communities age-friendly. For participating cities, it was to increase awareness of local needs, gaps and good ideas for improvement in order to stimulate development. (RH)
