AnnotationThis paper summarises and analyses major changes that have occurred in the Australian population between the 1981 and 2011 population censuses, highlighting in particular the impact of migration and the significant ageing of the population and increase in life expectancy. The first section focuses on the pattern of population growth and the changing patterns of mortality, fertility and international migration. In the second section, changes in the composition of the population are considered with respect to ageing, ethnicity and households. Thirdly, changes in population spatial distribution are analysed. Finally, some of the implications of these changes for national population policy are examined and discussed briefly. (JL).
