AnnotationSaudi Arabia, the largest country in the Arabian Peninsula, is going through changes on its demographic front showing signs of ageing in the near future. A remarkable decline in mortality rates, lower fertility and gains in life expectancy at birth are factors that favour the ageing of Saudi Arabia's population - an indication of population health improvement. This paper examines age distributions over the last four decades for both natives and expatriates with the aim of delineating changes over time. Data utilised in this analysis are of national censuses conducted in 1974, 1992 and 2004. The growth of the native and expatriate population was noted. While the expatriate population does not show an ageing trend, there is an accelerated ageing trend among the native population. Projections indicate further constriction of the age pyramid in the coming decade. Changes in Saudi Arabian demography are indicative of transition in birth and death rates leading to population ageing. It is time for the country to adopt social policies and population-based information-driven development planning to meet the challenges of ageing. (JL).
