AnnotationSweden was the first European country to undergo a technology shift in the field of social alarms and telecare services. Other European countries, including the UK, are now following this trend. This article traces development, from Swedish central government commissioning the Swedish Institute of Assistive Technology to write a report, 'Social alarms: new technology for new infrastructures', to local government having a nationally coordinated purchase agreement. The benefits of such social alarms and telecare services are outlined. (RH).
