Annotation | The 2011 Census statistics provide a rich source of information about the number, distribution and characteristics of the population in England and Wales. In 2011, 9.2 million or 16% of usual residents in England and Wales were aged 65 and over, an increase of almost one million from 2001 (8.3 million or 16%). This publication uses data from the 2011 Census to analyse and present information on the characteristics of older people in England and Wales: marital status, living arrangements, housing tenure, economic activity, and general health and provision of unpaid care.
