AnnotationAlthough LGBT people age and are living longer and their rights are being acknowledged, they are twice as likely to live alone and less likely to access health and social care for fear of discrimination. The author presents two case studies of gay men to illustrate the themes that he sees as central to his psychodynamic therapeutic work with LGBT people. The first, in his 90s, had been referred by his GP for "a lingering depressive mood", and whose partner was his chief carer. The second, aged 55 when first presented, was the carer of a partner 20 years his senior who had developed signs of dementia and become difficult to care for. The author draws attention to the relational dynamics of working with LGBT people and the interpersonal aspects of therapy. (RH).
