AnnotationMedication adherence is a well-discussed matter among healthcare professionals. The WHO has defined the phenomenon as `the extent to which a person's behaviour _ taking medicine, following a diet and/or executing lifestyle changes, corresponds with agreed recommendations from a healthcare provider'. Medication nonadherence, on the other hand, is a major public health issue in the United States. This paper discusses key facts known about medication nonadherence based on past research including predictors, measurements and interventions and recent research developments. Recent research has shown the need to approach medication adherence as a complex behaviour of a patient's beliefs regarding illnesses and medications, and how it varies across each medication for each patient. The paper concludes with the call to develop tailored interventions that match with the reasons for nonadherence for each medication. (JL).
