Annotation | There has been a significant increase in the number of people committing suicide on the railways, but such cases are rarely reported in the press. This article considers the need to balance more open discussion of the trauma suffered by railway workers with issues such as preventing "copycat" suicides. It notes the campaigns headed by the Samaritans, including establishing a National Suicide Prevention Group, as well as advice on its website on how journalists should cover such stories. In 2010, the European Union (EU) set up a research project, RESTRAIL (Reduction of Suicides and Trespass on Railway Property), with the aim of providing analysis of costs and effective prevention.
