AnnotationThe authors used data from the Florida Retirement Study to examine the relationship between transportation support and self-regulatory driving behaviours of 566 community-dwelling older people living in retirement communities, with a focus on gender differences. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that older women were more likely to avoid driving at night or on the highway than their male counterparts. Help with transport from friends was found to increase the likelihood of self-regulatory driving behaviours. These findings imply that, given the transport alternatives available and gender differences in driving behaviours, transport policy and driving safety courses for older adults need to be developed.
