Annotation | A new initiative will build on existing evidence-based policy-making to guide decision-making in public services. This paper outlines how the world's first network of What Works centres are being established in partnership with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). These independent specialist centres will cover a diverse range of social policy areas; and they will produce and disseminate research evidence to local decision-makers on the effectiveness of interventions in each field. The four new What Works centres will focus on: crime reduction (part of the new College of Policing); local economic growth; a Centre for ageing better (being established by the Big Lottery Fund, or BIG); and early intervention (delivered by the Early Intervention Foundation). These new centres will be joined in a new What Works network by two established centres, which already lead the way in promoting evidence-based decision making within their sectors: the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE); and the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).
