Annotation | The author summarised the key findings of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust Public Inquiry (Francis report) in BGS Newsletter, no 42 (March 2013). In this article, he sets out the implications of 'Patients first and foremost', the Government's response to Francis, for those caring for older people. He focuses on five key actions: preventing problems; detecting problems quickly; taking action promptly; robust accountability; and ensuring staff are trained and motivated. He also draws attention to the approaches adopted by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and the King's Fund. The latter held a conference on the outcomes and implications of the Inquiry in Feburary 2013, 'Assuring patient safety and quality across the system of care'.
