AnnotationThis special issue supplement features five articles which together describe and introduce the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA). TILDA is one of a family of longitudinal studies that includes, among others, the U.S. Health and Retirement Study (HRS). The HRS has acted as a template for the design of longitudinal ageing studies around the world. The main purpose of this supplement is to introduce the international community to TILDA, describe comparability with the 'HRS family' of studies and showcase the potential of TILDA, particularly for researchers in geriatric medicine. Following a brief introduction the first article in the supplement sets out the main features of the design of the study, the themes and topics it addresses, the sample design, fieldwork procedures used, response rates achieved and weighting processes. The second article describes the development of the health assessment component of the study. The third article aims to provide normative values of tests of cognitive and physical function of older adults. The fourth article compares TILDA with other international longitudinal studies from England and the United States. Finally the fifth article looks at different domains of quality of life in old age, including evidence from the Irish cohort study. (JL).
