AnnotationThe 2011 Census indicates that more people than ever are taking on caring responsibilities, with the number of those people providing round the clock care rising the fastest. More than 3000 carers completed the questionnaire for Carers UK's survey 'The state of caring 2013', answering a wide range of questions about their experiences of caring. This report highlights five challenges to improve carers' lives: ensure better access to support and information; deliver services and workplaces that support carers to juggle work and care; act urgently to prevent carers' financial hardship; ensure carers are able to achieve the best health outcomes possible; and deliver high quality care and improve the interface between health and social care services. The report notes recent and proposed changes in how carers are treated by health, social care and welfare systems in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. (RH).
