AnnotationThe theories of personhood and person-centred care (PCC) as proposed by Tom Kitwood in 1997 have led to the development of a corpus of knowledge and the application of PCC in formal care settings. This article summarises some of the literature, including the Caring for Age Dementia Care Resident Study (CADRES) in Australia. The authors conclude that there is increasing evidence that multi-component PCC strategies can positively contribute to reducing behavioural symptoms and improve the quality of life of people with dementia. However, it remains unclear which component of PCC is effective or at what stage and type of dementia these strategies become useful. (RH).
