Annotation | The authors outline the findings of a study that looked at how carers of people with dementia relate to and make use of their neighbourhood, and what could be done to improve local support. Three discussion groups were held with 30 carers from across Salford, recruited through carer support groups. Of these, 14 worked closely with the researchers to provide a better understanding of the significance of neighbourhoods for them. Findings reveal three themes regarding the importance of neighbourhood for dementia care: the changing meaning of home; being able to get out and about; and proximity of facilities. Participants' experiences varied a great deal, with some having extensive support networks to draw from, and other having a more limited number of contacts. Neighbourhoods thus have the facility to support carers in many ways, but that these are not fully understood. (RH). |
