AnnotationRacism and discrimination take many forms within UK care homes, and racist views may be expressed between staff and residents, as well as within these groups. Yet person-centred care relies on the ability to empathise with the predicament of the person with dementia. This article refers to a training workshop run by the Newcastle Challenging Behaviour Service, which explored how to respond to dementia sufferers' racial abuse of care home staff. The focus is on staff accounts of the difficulties they face when residents express racist views. The potential causes of racism and possible staff coping strategies are examined; and active and avoidant behavioural and cognitive approaches are compared. Although racism is often accepted as inevitable within care settings, with proper training, staff can overcome these difficulties. (RH).
