Annotation | This paper attempts to overcome the barriers to older people's participation in mental health focused clinical research. Ten barrier themes are identified: access, gatekeeper influence, health, inclusion/exclusion criteria, informed consent, participant fears or concerns, prevalence of disorders, research procedures, societal attitudes, and willingness. The general literature is summarised, and practical solutions are offered. The authors conclude that a partnership model is vital in ensuring study success. They suggest there is a need for work into specific fears that might exist or interact with poor mental health when considering such issues in relation to older people. (RH). |
