AnnotationThe authors review the literature for evidence of barriers to older people's participation in clinical studies, specifically those related to. mental health research. Of 17 articles identified, only two focus on researching psychiatric difficulties in later life. The authors discuss the points raised in the two mental health papers, and summarise data from six interviews or survey studies drawn from their search. Results are discussed in terms of how the general barriers featured might apply to mental health, with an emphasis on qualitative differences between the two fields. They conclude that there is a clear need to conduct further research into this topic so that future studies more systematically represent this population, thus better informing services and treatment.
