AnnotationIn the first of two articles, the author reviews the evidence that tells us why being outside - essential for everyone's health and well-being - has particular benefits for people with dementia. The article draws attention to recent studies on the benefits of being outside: vitamin D from sunlight to maintain bone and muscle strength; physical exercise; reduced risk of depression; reduction in cognitive decline; independence and sense of freedom; prevention of seasonal affective disorder; help with circadian rhythms and improved sleep patterns; improved appetite; and reduced incontinence. The benefits of a view from a building to the outside, and reduction in the need for drugs are also highlighted. (RH).
