AnnotationA new type of living arrangement for people with dementia that focuses on putting their needs first. The authors describe Shared Lives, a model of support that had previously been developed for people with learning disabilities. The organisation Innovations in Dementia has been working with Shared Lives South West to develop this form of adult social care, which offers permanent support or regular breaks in the home of a local family, and is thus an alternative to residential care. This article puts the case for alternative models of care, as suggested in the National Dementia Strategy (2009). It describes the aims of the National Shared Lives and Dementia Project and its activities and the schemes being run; also the findings so far. (RH).
