| Annotation | This Position Statement represents the views of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine. It was approved by the Federal Council of the ANZSGM on 22nd August 2011. The statement covers a range of issues related to obesity and ageing including: healthy ageing in relation to weight; weight loss and its risks; what contributes to overweight and obesity in older people; classification of overweight and obesity (eg body mass index, waist circumference etc) and whether it is appropriate for older people; consequences of overweight and obesity in older people; and weight loss strategies, eg. diet and exercise, surgery and drugs.
