Annotation | The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of recuperative care after hospital discharge. The combined qualitative and quantitative research included a trial of recuperative care versus standard NHS hospital rehabilitation involving 145 patients in three pilot areas within Kent and interviews with a sample of 20 patients about their experience of recuperative care. The article describes the study methodology, and presents the results. It includes selected quotes illustrating recuperative care attributes (physical rehabilitation programme, activity programme, participation in simple domestic chores, encouragement of independence, interaction with similar patients, complementing a fixed routine with freedom of choice activities, continuity of location and staff, and geographical and social links with the local community). The quantitative outcome data showed a small positive difference in initial discharge destination with slightly more patients discharged home from recuperative care than from hospital. The qualitative data demonstrated recuperative care to be a highly-rated, positive and sometimes life-changing experience for patients. The authors conclude that recuperative care is a model of partnership working which has potential to free up hospital beds while benefitting patients. (JL). |
