Annotation | Recent research by the Institute of Medicine has revealed that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults are one of the least understood groups in terms of their health and ageing-related needs. This article sets out what is known about health disparities among the older LGBT community, and outlines risk and protective factors impacting the health of LGBT older adults including discrimination and victimisation, other obstacles to health care and support networks. Some policy implications for moving forward are then discussed including service and intervention developments. (JL). |
