Annotation | Chronic pain is a major health condition associated with ageing whose management is generally unsatisfactory. This article reviews the relevance of existing and potential research on the assessment and management of chronic pain in older adults. Main issues addressed include the prevalence and impact of pain in older adults, age-related changes in pain perception, the undertreatment of pain, the attitudes and beliefs of carers and health professionals concerning pain, and the management of pain including self-management. Implications for policy, practice and research are discussed. (JL). |
