AnnotationThis paper outlines how the Assimilation Model of Problematic Voices (APV) can be used to describe the relationship which a person with dementia has with the condition. The model suggests that most experiences in a person's life are unproblematic and can be assimilated routinely into that person's understanding of the world. In this paper, the model is adapted to focus on the psychological tasks that confront people with dementia: helping dementia to emerge as the problem without being overwhelmed; identifying dementia as the problem while gaining and perspective; and working through, trying out problem solutions.
