AnnotationThe author attempts to map the interrelationships and common ground between the study of ageing (gerontology) and spirituality with special reference to lifelong learning. There is an increasing amount of literature on ageing and spirituality in terms of health and welfare, but the purpose here is to focus on the learning and development aspects of later life spirituality and the ways that these might apply both to individuals and for an ageing society. This includes identifying issues and posing questions about education for spiritual development in late adulthood. The mapping begins by defining territories and domains, and then moving to some conceptual frameworks. Some unifying concepts are explored further - successful ageing, continuity theory, and the metaphor of journey - in order to examine current understandings in all three fields (gerontology, spirituality and lifelong learning). The paper does not include faith-community practice regarding older people, although material reflecting on this is also becoming increasingly available as faith organisations respond to the ageing of their members.
