AnnotationInternationally, the goal of meeting the needs and demands of ageing populations is producing a growing variety of initiatives that combine learning and new forms of civic engagement for older people. The rationale for these programmes is based on the reciprocal benefits to the well-being of ageing individuals and their communities of continued social and economic participation in later life. This paper describes the background, settings, activities and partnerships involved in a range of models and approaches for linking lifelong learning and civic engagement. These encompass both American and European developments, and include projects to enhance and employ the skills and expertise of older individuals for voluntary and other service across diverse public and non-governmental sectors and private enterprise. Developments within the United Kingdom context are explored, and potential future directions are discussed. (RH).
