AnnotationThis 'Bromley briefings: prison factfile' is one in a series with this title produced twice a year since November 2006 in memory of Keith Bromley, a friend of the Prison Reform Trust (PRT). It presents recent facts and figures from government and other official sources on prisons and prisoners in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It includes information on older prisoners (aged 50+). On 31 March 2011, there were 8,120 prisoners aged over 50 in England and Wales, including 605 aged over 70. Other concerns relating to older prisoners include physical and mental health problems, also the lack of palliative care for those who are terminally ill. The appointment by the Association of Directors of Adult Social Care Services (ADASS) of a lead on social care for offenders and their families is noted. (RH).
