AnnotationThis study examined whether anxiety and depressive symptomatology moderated the relationship between age and quality of life. The community-based sample consisted of 443 adults aged 30 to 98 years. Quality of life was assessed using the World Health Organisation Quality of Life-BREF assessment. Depression was assessed using the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale and anxiety was assessed using the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, a measure of social anxiety. Depression and anxiety, but not age, were negatively associated with quality of life in the Psychological and Social domains. Age negatively associated for the Physical domain and positively associated for the Environmental domain, with respect to quality of life. The authors conclude that older people with high levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms reported better environmental and higher quality of life compared with middle-aged adults with similar conditions.
