AnnotationWith an ageing population the incidence of Alzheimer's disease is predicted to grow in the coming decades, and many young adults today will become formal or informal caregivers. Their ability to support the independence and well-being of people with Alzheimer's will depend on their ability to identify intact social and cognitive abilities, selfhood, and needs of people with Alzheimer's. This study, conducted in an undergraduate seminar in the United States, provides evidence for the educational advantages of a bio-psycho-social approach to understanding these aspects of people with Alzheimer's. Results, based on the feedback from 15 students, revealed a striking increase in students' accurate understanding of: the losses due to Alzheimer's; intact positive qualities in and inaccurate negative stereotypes about people with Alzheimer's; and important needs of people with Alzheimer's. The application of this approach is explored further in the case of one student and her family. (JL).
