Annotation | The National Dementia Strategy (NSD) for England aims to help ensure that uniform care is delivered to patients with dementia and that standards are maintained at a nationally agreed level. It also encourages the identification of successful innovations that can be implemented on a wider scale. This paper uses case studies to describe some examples of innovative practice in the diagnosis and management of patients with dementia in primary care. Five GPs in different parts of England, who were identified as innovators in dementia care, discussed their experiences and practices. The study also looks at methodological problems in the evaluation and comparison of innovations in practice, focusing on the potential to compare complex with simple interventions. The authors acknowledge the role that commissioners play in making decisions about the choice and implementation of innovation. (JL). |
