Annotation | Explores different definitions of violence towards older people in the Russian context, examines the UN's approach to the problem of violence and looks at types of abuse and violence towards older people recorded in the Russian mass media. These include physical violence including murder, financial exploitation, emotional trauma and neglect. The article concludes with some brief extracts from the results of a poll of older Muscovites who were asked what they wanted from social services. Among the problems they faced were poor access to public transport, inadequate protection from criminals and disrespectful attitudes to old age. (JL). |
