Annotation | There has been an increase in research focusing on how self and identity are affected by the onset and progression of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The purpose of this article was to review the main features of interventions aiming to support self and identity in people with dementia, to draw conclusions regarding the effectiveness of these interventions, and to highlight the implications for future research. Following a comprehensive literature search, ten studies were selected which met the inclusion criteria. All reported some benefits to participants. There were significant methodological limitations and study quality was generally low. The interventions varied in terms of participant characteristics, content and outcome measures. The article concludes that intervention research in this area is in the preliminary stages, and it is thus difficult to draw any conclusions from the evidence to date. However, the studies do highlight the potential of such interventions to support and improve well-being in people with dementia and suggest that further investigation is warranted. (JL). |
