AnnotationThe association between the use of cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEOs) and time to hare home placement is examined. The authors compared patients who were prescribed ChEOs in 2006 with those who were not with respect to their placement in care homes over a 4-year period using survival analysis. During the first 30 months of follow-up, there was a delay in care home placement by a median of 12 months in those who took ChEOs compared with those who did not. However, at the end f the the follow-up, there was no significant reduction in the probability of being in a care home setting between those who had taken ChEOs compared with those who had not. The study provides some evidence to suggest that prescribing ChEOs may ve associated with a delay in the timing of cre home placement s observed in the first 2.5years of treatment. However, based on purely observational data, no conclusion can be made as to whether such association is causal. (RH).
