Annotation | A combined meta-analysis of data from 16 epidemiological studies and 10 clinical trials in which maltreatment was defined as physical or sexual abuse, neglect, or family conflict or violence found that childhood maltreatment was associated with more than double the risk of recurrent and persistent depressive episodes in adulthood. This short article outlines the findings of a study led by Andrea Danese of the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, London, and published online in the American Journal of Psychiatry (doi: 10.1176/appi.ajp.2011.11020335 ).
